What Is an Annular Tear?

An annular tear is a small split or fissure in the annulus, the tough outer ring of a spinal disc. The annulus surrounds the disc’s softer center and helps contain it between neighboring vertebrae. An annular tear may cause localized back or neck pain, or it may occur with disc changes without obvious symptoms.

Key Takeaways About Annular Tear

  • The injury affects the disc’s outer ring, not the spinal cord.
  • Symptoms may arise from irritation near the damaged disc.
  • An annular tear is not the same as a herniated disc.

How Annular Tear Works

An annular tear develops when fibers in the outer disc ring become split or irritated. The annulus helps hold the disc’s inner material in place between the vertebrae. A tear can expose sensitive tissue and may contribute to pain near the affected spinal level.

Clinicians interpret an annular tear alongside symptoms, movement findings, and imaging when imaging is available. A tear may exist without nerve compression. A herniated disc involves material pushing through a weakened area, while an annular tear describes damage to the surrounding ring. Care may focus on reducing mechanical strain and improving spinal movement. The lumbar spine and cervical spine are common regions discussed in relation to disc injuries.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractic - Albany team

When we assess a suspected annular tear, we connect the reported symptoms with spinal movement, posture, and nearby nerve findings. We use that clinical picture to guide care within our Herniated Disc Treatment service. We do not treat an imaging phrase as a complete explanation by itself.

Annular Tear in Practice: A Real-World Example

A person with low back pain may have an annular tear that hurts during bending or prolonged sitting. During Herniated Disc Treatment, the clinical picture helps distinguish disc-related pain from symptoms linked to nearby joints or muscles.
