What Is Kinesiology Tape?

Kinesiology Tape is an elastic, adhesive strip applied to the skin to provide light sensory input and support during movement. The tape follows the contours of a body area and may help a person notice posture or motion. It does not replace examination, rehabilitation, strength work, or treatment of an underlying injury.

How Kinesiology Tape Works

Kinesiology Tape works through its elastic fabric and adhesive contact with the skin. The material stretches as the body moves, so the application can provide light support without holding a joint completely still. Contact with the skin also gives the nervous system extra information about movement and position.

Placement depends on the body area, the direction of movement, and the goal of the application. A clinician may assess motion before applying the tape and observe how the person moves afterward. Rigid athletic tape serves a different purpose because it limits motion more firmly. Tape may complement exercises or manual care, but it does not correct the source of an injury by itself. Skin condition and comfort also guide application and removal.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractic - Albany team

When we use Kinesiology Tape, we first consider the person’s movement pattern and the area involved. We check that the skin is suitable for application and that the tape supports the intended activity without restricting normal motion. Our team also reviews how the person responds during movement.
