What Is Pelvic Tilt?

Pelvic Tilt is a change in the position of the pelvis that alters the curve and alignment of the lower back. The pelvis may rotate forward or backward, or shift from side to side. Clinicians assess pelvic tilt through posture, movement, and muscle control during activities such as standing, walking, or bending.

Key Takeaways About Pelvic Tilt

  • Pelvic tilt describes pelvic position, not a single diagnosis.
  • Movement and posture can change how pelvic tilt appears.
  • Pelvic tilt is not the same as pelvic pain.

How Pelvic Tilt Works

Pelvic Tilt occurs when the pelvis rotates or shifts relative to the spine and legs. An anterior tilt rotates the front of the pelvis downward, while a posterior tilt rotates the front upward. Side-to-side movement can also create an uneven pelvic position.

Clinicians observe pelvic tilt during standing, walking, squatting, and other movements. They consider how the pelvis, lumbar spine, hips, and abdominal muscles coordinate. A person may control the position actively, or the position may appear as part of a broader movement pattern.

During prenatal care, changing body shape and load can alter how a person stands or moves. Pelvic tilt provides one way to describe those changes without treating the position itself as a diagnosis.

From the Arrowhead Clinic Chiropractic - Albany team

When we assess pelvic tilt during prenatal chiropractic care, we observe standing posture and comfortable movement. We also consider the relationship between the pelvis, lower back, hips, and changing pregnancy demands. Our team uses those observations to guide a careful clinical discussion and choose appropriate care strategies.

Pelvic Tilt in Practice: A Real-World Example

A pregnant person may stand with the pelvis rotated forward as the abdomen changes body balance. During an assessment, we observe how that position changes with walking, sitting, or gentle movement.
